At the age of seventeen, when her parents began the arduous process of divorce, Stefani picked up her mother’s old Stella Harmony and a book of guitar chords and began to learn to play the guitar. A singer since she was 10 years old, Stefani knew she didn’t want to just be a tambourine girl. Playing the piano never stuck, but the guitar, ahem, struck a chord with her and she has been playing ever since.
From August of 2004 until August of 2005 Stefani was a Thomas J Watson Fellow, which brought her to New Zealand, Samoa, India and Vietnam. While her project revolved around anthropology, she brought her guitar with her and played gigs in some very strange places.
Stefani has played with a variety of bands in a variety of venues since her return to the USA. Her music is tangible. Her influences, Bonnie Raitt, Ani DiFranco, Fleetwood Mac, and Jackson Browne, have based Stefani in a lyrical tradition.
